Vocal instrumental competition

On Thursday, 10th August 2023, an inter-house vocal pop-off competition was held at Delhi Public School, Nerul, Navi Mumbai. The presenters- Started the program with a welcome speech with the rules of the contest.

The Rules

1) The maximum number of participants in a team can be 18 members.

2) The maximum time allotted will be 6 minutes

3) There has to be one original version of a folk song.

Each house will be allotted a state. The house will have to represent the state with it's folk culture and tradition.


Rajasthan (Yamuna house)

The performance started with a beautiful recital of the song "padharo mhare desh" which is a famous song from Rajasthan. With that, follows an instrumental jugalbandi between various traditional and western instruments which transitions into the song "Chaudhary" by the famous singer Mame Khan who gives a modern twist to folk tunes. At last, the performance ends with a fun bollywood song "tharki chokro". The performance was simple but had the genuine feel and energy of a true folk performance. There was a perfect blend of folk culture with a modern pop twist which elated the audience to sing and clap with the singers.

Assam (Ganga house)

The performance was based on a rendition of a famous folk song "Tukh Dekhi Mur Ga" which is a song based on the harvest festival of Bihu in Assam. The song starts out with a beautiful solo keyboard with an excellent and an energetic clapbox performance. The performance was largely traditional with many hints of pop culture integrated in it.

Maharashtra (Chenab)

The song chosen by Chenab house was a famous maharashtrian Folk song "Dholtaara". It was an interesting integration between the folk singers with modern fast paced instruments like the Electric Guitar and Drums. The highlight of the performance was by far the dual of the Drums and the Electric guitar. In this segment, the crowd's response and reaction was just amazing.

Kashmir (Sutlej)

The performance was based on the song "Bhumro", which is a beautiful Kashmiri song. The performance started with an energetic trio. This was soon calmed down by a flute performance which gave a peaceful vibe. With that, the main vocalists again made the environment energetic. The overall environment the performers created was just spectacular.

Jhelum (West Bengal)

The song performed is a bengali classic "Sundori Komola"

Ravi (Gujarat)

This performance by Ravi House was a mix of Folk and modern day gujarati pop culture. The starting was a folk song "Odani" which was followed by an amazing solo electric guitar performance. This acted as a bridge to the next song "shehnai". The performance and the delivery of the music was energetic to say the least. The audience too was mesmerized and enthusiastic about the songs and clapped through the performance.

Results

Alas! The part everyone waited for! The results! This was truly difficult for the judges to decide the winner! Indeed a tough competition! After multiple assessments, here are the winners-



Rank-3 Ganga House (Assam)
Rank-2 Yamuna House (Rajasthan)
Rank-1 Ravi House (Gujarat)
