Here, comes the phenomenon of fan polarization, which is nothing but a manifestation where a fan base of a sports team, entertainment franchise, or any other entity becomes divided into opposing factions, often due to differing opinions, beliefs, or experiences.

Now, psychology enthusiasts might know about group polarization but how it differs from fan polarization might be a question. so, group polarization is a broader social psychological concept that discusses how individuals are more likely to make extreme decisions in a group rather than when alone whereas fan polarization is more specific and is related to a certain sport or personality. Fan polarization is a specific instance of group polarization within a fandom.

To understand this concept in a relatable manner, let's take the example of Taylor Swift's fanbase, known as "Swifties". After her album "Reputation," which dealt with themes of betrayal and public perception, fans rallied together, forming a strong in-group identity. This camaraderie led to heightened loyalty among fans and often resulted in negative sentiments toward critics or rival artists. This can attract more attention, even from those who may not be fans. Fans often become more committed to defending their favourite artist when they feel the need to counteract negativity. Taylor Swift, for example, often interacts with fans on social media, which can help her address concerns or clarify misunderstandings.
