The Ministry of Defense had ordered 56 C295s from Airbus in 2021 for a cost of Rs.21,000 crores. The aircraft is soon going to replace the Antonov AN-32 transport fleet of IAF. Also, a joint venture between IAF and TATA has been initiated to construct a manufacturing plant in Vadodara, Gujarat for manufacturing 40 of the 56 aircrafts and possible future aircrafts.
The first aircraft has been completed and will be delivered by September 2023. In the next year, 16 other planes are scheduled to be delivered. The remaining planes are going to be manufactured by a consortium of TATA and Airbus in Vadodara, Gujarat. All aircrafts are to be fitted with indigenous electronic systems. The IAF has also sent a few pilots for training at the Airbus facility in Seville, Spain.
