The aircraft collided directly with BJ Medical College shortly after takeoff, killing 49 people on the ground. In total, 290 lives have been lost in the disaster, making it one of the deadliest air accidents in India in recent years. Recovery teams are working to identify victims and return remains to families.

The sole survivor is Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, a British national of Indian origin. He is currently being treated at a local hospital and is reported to be in stable, non-critical condition. According to his family, who spoke with him by phone, he said he is “fine” and may be discharged in the coming days.

Indian government officials have confirmed that Vijay Rupani, the former Chief Minister of Gujarat, is believed to be among the victims.

India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has launched a formal investigation into the incident. Union Minister of Civil Aviation Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu stated that aviation experts from the United States and United Kingdom are being deployed to assist with the probe.

Boeing President and CEO Kelly Ortberg expressed condolences and offered Air India full support. “A Boeing team stands ready to support the investigation led by India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau,” he said in a statement. This appears to be the first major incident involving this specific Boeing 787-8 aircraft.

According to officials, a final report detailing the likely causes of the crash is expected by June 12 of next year.
